Lunar Meteorite Risks

This activity is based on research by Dr. Bill Cooke, a member of NASA's Space Environments Team. Between November 2005 and November 2006, Dr. Cooke's team observed flashes of light coming from the lunar surface; these flases result from meteoroid impacts. Students will learn about probabilities and will calculate the average area of an impact zone for a single event. In addition, students will calculate the time interval between impacts and the energy of a typical Leonid meteoroid that might hit the Moon.
